Aroma & Character

Jiaogulan, also known as the “herb of immortality” or “herb of the 100-year-olds”, has long been prized in Asia and is now finding more and more fans in Europe too. It is used as a natural supplement as part of a balanced and conscious lifestyle. The plant is full of antioxidants. It is said to have similar effects to ginseng, only even better! We are unable to provide any information on taste and preparation here, as jiaogulan falls under the Novel Food Regulation in the EU and is therefore not allowed to be sold as a foodstuff. You can read below why this is the case and what it means. We sell our first-class jiaogulan explicitly for decorative or fragrance purposes only. The fragrance is unique and beguiling with sweet, licorice-like notes balanced with tart, grassy notes.

Origin

Our Jiaogulan is grown in the lush, fertile regions of China. The unique combination of tropical climate and mineral-rich soil provides the ideal conditions for cultivating this special plant. Gently harvested by hand, the herb is traditionally processed to preserve its natural quality. Each batch of Jiaogulan is thoroughly tested in the German laboratory of Fresenius to ensure the highest quality and purity.

Specialities

Although jiaogulan has been used traditionally in Asia for centuries and its ingredients are thought to have a number of positive effects on the body, EU regulations do not allow the plant to be sold here as a foodstuff. The reason for this is the Novel Food Regulation, which was passed in 1997. All foods that were not consumed to any significant extent in the EU at that time were simply not included in the list of approved foods. However, this says nothing about the health or safety of the plants. Foods that are classified as novel foods must first undergo a safety assessment and be approved by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA). A very time-consuming and cost-intensive process that is not worthwhile for anyone. Of course you can buy and consume jiaogulan legally. However, we explicitly do not sell it as food. It is only used for fragrance and decorative purposes.
